Book Review – The Burglar Who Thought He Was Bogart – Lawrence Block

When Bernie Rhodenbarr, your local friendly burglar, falls in love, a little known european country, several suspicious characters and a Bogart movie festival are all ingredients of the latest murder mystery starring Bernie the Burglar.

One of the reasons I like Bernie, and in turn, Lawrence Block, is that he does try to shock you, nor does he use shock in his books. While other authors go into great detail about the sex their characters have, or some authors who will write shocking acts of violence just to garner attention, Bernie, on those odd occasions when he does get lucky, chooses the way of the gentleman and leaves it up to your imagination. This is so much better than reading about sex acts described in detail and on how the female orgasms multiple times within minutes.

This is probably one of the funnier Bernie books with some truly classic ethnic insults flying around at the end of the book and commentry on several of Bogarts movies, some well known but some perhaps not so well known.

Yet another excellent Lawrence Block book!

  1. Thanks for the recommendation. I’ve never heard of Lawrence Block before. I’ve ordered the first in this series, “Burglers can’t be choosers”. Have you read it ?
