Movie Review – Source Code

A captain in the US Air Force wakes up from a strange dream to find himself in a metal capsule, looking at a face on a monitor, telling him to look for a bomber. Only it wasn’t a dream. There is a bomb on a train, the only problem is that the train exploded this morning, killing everyone on it. Source Code is the second movie by Duncan Jones, son of David Bowie. His first was the highly acclaimed Moon. Source Code stars Jake Gyllenhaal as Colter Stevens, a pilot who thinks he was just flying missions in Afghanistan, thrown in this strange situation where he must find the bomber before he can strike again. The girl sitting across from him on the train is Christina Warren, played by Michelle Monaghan. She is cute, alluring, and not outrageously sexy so it perfect for this role. Stevens contact for his missions is Captain Goodwin, played by the unconventionally beautiful Vera Farmiga. Rounding out the main characters is Dr. Rutledge, the creator of the source code, played by the always wonderful Jeffery Wright. At first blush, this looks like Groundhog Day with a bomb on a train and in many ways it [...]

Movie Review – Sucker Punch

Baby Doll is sent to an insane asylum by her step father and is due to be lobotomized in five days. To help survive the asylum, she develops an alternative reality and finds four friends to help try to escape. Directed and written by Zack Snyder of Watchmen and 300 fame, Sucker Punch is a visual movie where all the action takes place in different realities to the real one. To begin with it is a little confusing but soon you don’t even notice as the action distracts you with a feast of imagination and violence. The five inmates who try to escape are Amber, played by Jamie Chung, Blondie, played by Vanessa Hudens, Rocket by Jena Malone, Sweat Pea by Abbie Cornish and finally, the lead character, Baby Doll, played by Emily Browning. Other notable actors include Carla Gugino as a doctor and Scott Glenn as, well someone. If Sucker Punch was a meal, the recipe would involve ingredients of Reign of Fire, Steam punk, World War 1, Robot Samurai, futuristic robots, Inception, Sin City, and lots of imagination. It is a movie that could only be made using the same processes used on 300 and Sin City. Probably [...]

Movie Review – The Tourist

Frank, an American, is meet on a train by a beautiful but mysterious woman who invites him to stay with her in Venice to use as a decoy. Various watchers however assume that he is someone else and things start to happen for the unsuspecting Frank. If you are going to have a romantic action movie, it should be shot in Venice, and The Tourist is. If you want to have two of the biggest names in movies today, you get Angelina Jolie and Johnny Depp to star in it. The Tourist has this too. You would expect that in one of the most romantic cities in the world, with two of the sexiest stars in the world, that this would have to be the most sexiest, romantic movie ever. It isn’t. It is funny, romantic in a sweet kind of way, all mixed up in a thriller, mystery, whodunnit type of movie but it isn’t the most anything. It is a good looking movie, as it is probably quite hard to make Venice look unattractive. Angelina Jolie, one of the more beautiful women in the world, and to be fair, a pretty good actress too, looks more like Sophia [...]

Movie Review – The Golden Rendezvous

A tramp steamer with extremely rich passengers is high-jacked by a group of terrorists who seem to be planning more than a simple hi-jack. Only Carter, one of the crew stands in the way of more bloodshed. Based upon an Alistair MacLean novel, The Golden Rendezvous is an action packed movie that is very typical of it’s era, that being the 1970′s. A lot of action, the acting perhaps not the greatest but acceptable and a great cast of notable actors in it. In many ways, the movie was made the same way that TV shows in the 80′s were made. Bad guys shot, apparently aiming and yet cannot hit anything while the good guys, shot one handed, with the gun wobbling and still manage to hit what they are aiming for. Richard Harris is the main character and as such is great. Harris was always fun to watch and in this movie he is no different. Such names as Gordon Jackson, John ‘guess who the villain is’ Vernon, David Janssen, Burgess Meredith and John Carradine fill out the cast with the drop dead beautiful Ann Turkel as the requisite female. Funnily enough, the music was written by Jeff Wayne, [...]
