Kennington wins at Kawartha

DJ Kennington and the #17 Castrol Edge Dodge team approached the final event of the 2011 NASCAR Canadian Tire Series at Kawartha Speedway with a plan to claim another victory at the .375 mile track to close out the season.  And the 2010 champion would do just that.

The #17 Castrol Edge Dodge was fastest during the afternoon practice session and Kennington looked to make a statement during qualifying.  However he would push a little too hard and wound up with the tenth stating spot.  “I just over drove the car” said the frustrated driver after.  “I sure made our job a little harder” he added.

When the green flag waved for the 250 lap event Kennington quickly had the #17 Castrol Edge Dodge moving forward.  “The car was really strong so I was able to get a couple of positions pretty quickly” said Kennington.  “I didn’t want to push too hard in the early going though”.

Kennington continued to move forward and put the #17 Castrol Edge Dodge into the race lead for the first time on lap 70.  “We made a pit stop and got fuel and left side tires and when we got back out I was able to get in front where we expected to be” explained Kennington.

Following a second stop for right side tires Kennington would again need to march back to the front of the field.  “I took exactly the same approach” explained Kennington.  “I just took my time and the #17 Castrol Edge Dodge had plenty of horsepower to get the job done” he added.

Kennington would take the lead for good on lap 167 and maintain a comfortable lead in the #17 Castrol Edge Dodge.  A late caution would bunch the field for a green, white, checkered race finish.  “You never like to see that but I knew we had the strongest car at that point” said the driver.

On the final restart Kennington would again pull ahead and then claim his second victory of the season.  “It feels good to finish on a high note like this” said Kennington.  “I can’t say enough about my team and how hard they’ve worked all season long.  All the great support we receive from Castrol Edge, Mahindra Tractors, Bryan Cathcart.  We have so many people that help us out and we couldn’t do this if it wasn’t for their great support.

With the win DJ Kennington finishes the season second in the overall standings.  “We came up just a bit short trying to win another championship, but I want to congratulate Scott Steckley and the #22 team on a great season and we’ll be back next year to try and get that title back” he stated.

Race fans can watch the final race of the season October 15th at 12:30PM Eastern Time on TSN.
