July 22, 2012. The incredible wave of success for DJ Kennington and the #17 Castrol Edge Dodge team continued in round number six of the NASCAR Canadian Tire Series Sunday at the Edmonton Indy. Expecting to finish on the podium Kennington came through the late race carnage from the front runners to claim his fourth consecutive series victory. The win gives Kennington a total of 15 wins in his career which ties him for most career series victories.
From the outset of the weekend activities the #17 Castrol Edge Dodge was among the quickest cars. “Our approach to these road course races is to have a solid car and be in position for a good finish” said Kennington.
That plan worked to perfection as Kennington lined up for the Edmonton 100 on Sunday in the sixth starting position. When the race began, the #17 Castrol Edge Dodge driver moved quickly into the top five. “Everything was going according to plan” explained Kennington. “I made one pass and another car fell out just after that and then I was able to challenge for third” he added.
As the laps ticked away under green for over three quarters of the event Kennington had no trouble maintaining his position. “I closed in on third a couple times but didn’t want to take any chances too early” he stated.
The #17 Castrol Edge Dodge would take over third when the #27 was forced to pit with brake issues. “I would have been happy with a third place result but on the last attempt at a green-white-checker finish things got a little crazy up front” he said.
On that final restart the two cars ahead of Kennington had contact sending both off line and out of contention. Remarkably the #17 Castrol Edge Dodge came through the mayhem unscathed. Kennington would complete the final two laps of the race out front and take the checkered flag to claim his fourth consecutive series win.
“I just can’t believe it” said Kennington afterwards. “I can’t believe we came through the incident with the #84 and the #22 to score this win. This is just so unbelievable to be on this kind of a roll. For Castrol Edge, Mahindra Tractors, Northern Provincial Pipeline, everybody that does so much for us it’s really great. Four in a row, amazing” he added.
Kennington was also quick to praise his hard working crew as a reason for the team’s success. “The guys on this team have worked so hard on these race cars” he stated. “Every week they give me such a great car to drive, I’ve said it before but I’ve got the best group anyone can ask for”.
After scoring his fourth consecutive series victory Kennington extends his lead in the overall championship point’s standings to 35 over second place.
DJ Kennington and the #17 Castrol Edge Dodge team will complete the series western swing on Wednesday evening, July 25th at Auto Clearing Motor Speedway. Fans can watch the race from Edmonton on TSN2 Saturday July 28th at 3PM Eastern.
