Pacific Rim - 2013
To fight monsters we created monsters
Plot: As a war between humankind and monstrous sea creatures wages on, a former pilot and a trainee are paired up to drive a seemingly obsolete special weapon in a desperate effort to save the world from the apocalypse.

In the mind of a young boy the monsters from the original Godzilla movies battle giant robots waist deep in an ocean. To recreate it, the boy sits in the bath with rubber monsters and toy robots and splashes and roars and destroys imaginary cities. This was probably how the original idea for Pacific Rim came about. Choose two cool things and put them together. Robots and Monsters…. I am sure there is already a B movie on Netflix with that title.
Forty years ago, the monsters and robots would have been costumes with stunt men inside, today however, computer generated graphics have replaced the men and the results is much more satisfactory. The monsters are diverse and unique as anything can be in the movies these days. Seemingly designed by people who think that Batman and Robin didn’t use enough neon lights.
The robots look wonderful, avoiding the Transformer look that was copied in Battleship. While the robots are huge, the details are wonderful with plenty to look at. That said, it is a little difficult to behold giant robots that can run, seeing as anything that large would destroy whatever they were running on and probably trip over.
Adequate and mostly unknown, the cast are pretty much the secondary story compared to the Goliath battles that are going on. It is an unfortunate trend that a dramatic and stirring speech is required for all movies such as this. Some can come off as incredibly cheesy, such as the one from Independence day, and then you have the one in this movie which is as cheesy but not as well written.
While not a classic science fiction, or even monster movie, Pacific Rim does have something that makes it enjoyable to watch. Guillermo del Toro has created a movie that perhaps will not be fully loved and appreciated until the DVD release if not later. Either way, Pacific Rim is a fun way to spend a couple of hours, especially if you spent your childhood in the bath fighting monsters with toy robots!
