While most people are thinking about summer holidays, we’ve been putting Thanksgiving plans in motion. The poults (day old baby turkeys), of our Thanksgiving fresh turkey flock, arrived last week. Did you know it’s only 14 weeks until Thanksgiving?

Janis and Mark Harris

Three great things for the long weekend

1. Sunny warm weather

2. Friends and family and good times

3. Janis and Mark Harris‘ sausages on the BBQ.

Impress your dinner guests with great pastured pork sausages this long weekend. Janis will pick and make as many bouquets as she can. The flowers are growing and as each week goes by there will be more and more. Sunflowers will be starting in a few weeks.

McSmiths Organic Farm

McSmiths will be bringing plenty of organic produce this weekend. McSmiths has been certified organic and has complied to the Organic Standards since 1984. So you can trust what we’ve grown on our farm to be safe for your family. Beware of other marketting labels, know your farmer know your food! Look for more peas, zucchini, heads of lettuces, beet bunches & early cabbages. Our Daughter Janis and her Husband Mark started making their excellent Cole Slaw from our produce…easy and ready to use.

Place the raspberries, olive oil, and balsamic vinegar in a blender. Cover, and blend until smooth, about 1 minute. Refrigerate until ready to use. Stir or shake before using.

Homemade Strawberry Ice Cream

Submitted by: Melissa Harris

I made this from Talbotville Berry Farm Strawberries that I got at the market last weekend!

3 cups washed, hulled, and chopped strawberries
3 cups half and half cream
1 1/2 cups white sugar
2 eggs (Frisa!)
1 Tbsp. water

Place berries in a bowl with 3/4 cup sugar and water. Stir to combine and let sit approximately 10 minutes. Macerate the berries (I use a potato masher) until mashed and the puree in a food processor.

Optional: I then strain the mixture through a sieve to remove the majority of seeds.

In a large bowl beat 2 eggs until thick and buttery yellow (about 2 mins.), then gradually add remaining 3/4 cup of sugar, beating slowly. Whisk in cream and stir until sugar is dissolved. Add berry puree and whisk until combined. Pour into the bowl of an ice cream maker and stir for 20- 30 minutes until desired consistency is reached. Transfer to a freezer safe container and level out the top.

I like to place a layer of plastic wrap on top to seal it before putting on the lid for extra freshness. Freeze for at least an hour. Enjoy!
