Austin, Gloria Faith


Austin, Gloria Faith of St. Thomas, passed away peacefully, on Thursday, December 19th, 2013, at the St. Thomas-Elgin General Hospital, in her 84th year. Dearly loved wife of James “Jim” Austin and much loved mother of James “Jamie” Austin (Carmen), Shaun Austin (Linda), Brock Austin (Corrina), Joel Austin, and Paul Austin (Andrea). Dear sister of Rosemary Sanders (late Dick), Peter Gerster (Dell),  Paul Gerster (Barbara), James Gerster (Ti), Darryl Gerster (Carol), Melanie Stephens (Dave) and Sue Vary. Sadly missed by a number of grandchildren and nieces, nephews and friends. Gloria was born in Lindsay, Ontario on June 1, 1930, the daughter of the late Fred and Jeanne (Smith) Gerster. She lived in Toronto and Port Stanley and for the past 60 years in this area. Gloria was a real estate agent. She was a member of St. Anne’s Church, the Catholic Women’s League, volunteered many years for the Friends of the Library, St. Thomas. Gloria contributed to the “Daytripper”, with a number of short stories.

The family will receive friends at Williams Funeral Home, 45 Elgin St., St. Thomas on Sunday from 1:00-4:00 p.m. Prayers will follow at 4:00 p.m. Mass of the Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Anne’s Church on Monday at 10:00 a.m. Cremation will follow, with private burial of ashes in Holy Angels’ Cemetery. Remembrances may be made to the Canadian Diabetes Association.

Williams Funeral Home
The Williams Funeral Home was founded in 1893 by P.R. Williams and is one of the oldest Funeral businesses in the province. Over the next seven decades the business was passed down through several generations in the Williams Family. In the eariler years they occupied a number of different buildings along Talbot Street and in 1929 they purchased the building at 45 Elgin Street, from which they still operate. In 1966, Gordon Hughson, who had operated the Hughson Funeral Home in Aylmer for the previous twenty one years, purchased the funeral home and continued the long tradition of dedication and service. Currently, the funeral home is operated by his sons, Allan and Gary Hughson.
