Chute, Gladys Irene of Caressant Care Home, St. Thomas, passed away peacefully, on Saturday, June 29th, 2013, at her late residence, in her 96th year. Dearly loved mother of Carl Chute (late Pauline) and Jim “Skip” Chute (Carol Mae) , all of St. Thomas. Predeceased by 4 brothers Arthur, Earl, Willard and Murry Finch and a sister Dorothy Finch. Sadly missed by several grandchildren, great grandchildren and nieces and nephews. Gladys was born in Aylmer, Ontario on July 20th, 1917, the daughter of the late Azel and Ella May (Brown) Finch. She was retired from the St. Thomas-Elgin General Hospital where she worked as a lab assistant. Gladys was a long time member of Centre Street Baptist Church. She also was a member of the 37 Club, the St. Thomas Seniors Centre and volunteered a number of years at the St. Thomas Public Library.
Resting at Williams Funeral Home, 45 Elgin St., St. Thomas where funeral service will be held Wednesday at 11:00 a.m. Visitation on Tuesday from 7-9 p.m. Private interment in Forest Lawn Cemetery. Remembrances may be made to the St. Thomas-Elgin General Hospital Foundation or charity of choice.
The Williams Funeral Home was founded in 1893 by P.R. Williams and is one of the oldest Funeral businesses in the province. Over the next seven decades the business was passed down through several generations in the Williams Family. In the eariler years they occupied a number of different buildings along Talbot Street and in 1929 they purchased the building at 45 Elgin Street, from which they still operate.
In 1966, Gordon Hughson, who had operated the Hughson Funeral Home in Aylmer for the previous twenty one years, purchased the funeral home and continued the long tradition of dedication and service. Currently, the funeral home is operated by his sons, Allan and Gary Hughson.
