Irwin, William “Bill” of St. Williams and formerly of St. Thomas, passed away peacefully, on Wednesday, September 25th, 2013, at the Norfolk General Hospital, Simcoe, in his 87th year. Beloved husband of the late Dorothy “Jean” (Fife) Irwin and dearly loved father of Tom and his wife Jackie Irwin of St. Thomas, Paul and his wife Diane Irwin of Calgary and the late Gail Clark (Gerry of St. Thomas). Dear brother of Donna McArthur (late Dick) of St. Thomas, late Eugene Irwin (Mary of the Ottawa area), Helen Fleming (late Jack) of St. Thomas, late Marilyn Williams (Jim of St. Thomas. Dear brother-in-law of Marion Gilchrist, Audrey Denny and Donna Virag. Sadly missed by 8 grandchildren, a number of great grandchildren and nieces and nephews. Bill was born in Iona on December 18th, 1926, the son of the late Albert and Evelyn (Renaud) Irwin. He was retired from Laidlaw Transport.
The family will receive friends at Williams Funeral Home, 45 Elgin St., St. Thomas on Saturday from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. A private family service will follow at 8:00 p.m. Cremation to follow, with interment of ashes in Union Cemetery . Remembrances may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or the Caring Cupboard.
The Williams Funeral Home was founded in 1893 by P.R. Williams and is one of the oldest Funeral businesses in the province. Over the next seven decades the business was passed down through several generations in the Williams Family. In the eariler years they occupied a number of different buildings along Talbot Street and in 1929 they purchased the building at 45 Elgin Street, from which they still operate.
In 1966, Gordon Hughson, who had operated the Hughson Funeral Home in Aylmer for the previous twenty one years, purchased the funeral home and continued the long tradition of dedication and service. Currently, the funeral home is operated by his sons, Allan and Gary Hughson.
