O’Brien, Mary Ellen of St. Thomas, passed away peacefully, on Saturday, September 14th, 2013, at the L.H.S.C. (Victoria Campus), in her 61st year. Dearly loved mother of Julie Cossette (Matt) of St. Thomas and loved grandmother of Regan. Loved daughter of John William “Bill” and the late Kathleen (Davis) O’Brien (2001). Loved sister of Jerry O’Brien (Susan) of St. Thomas, Cathy Medcalf (Don) of Calgary and Tim O’Brien (Cathy of Poplar Hill. Sadly missed by a number of nieces and nephews, Mary Ellen was born in St. Thomas on May 31st, 1953. She was a member of Holy Angels’ Church. Despite life-long struggles with her health, Mary Ellen consistently demonstrated courage and strength of character. Her lasting legacy is her faithfulness to her family and friends along with her love and devotions for her daughter Julie, son-in-law Matt and her granddaughter Regan.
Resting at Williams Funeral Home, 45 Elgin St., St. Thomas where funeral service will be held Tuesday at 11:00 a.m. Interment to follow in Holy Angels’ Cemetery. Visitation Monday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Remembrances may be made to Epilepsy Canada or the Canadian Cancer Society.
The Williams Funeral Home was founded in 1893 by P.R. Williams and is one of the oldest Funeral businesses in the province. Over the next seven decades the business was passed down through several generations in the Williams Family. In the eariler years they occupied a number of different buildings along Talbot Street and in 1929 they purchased the building at 45 Elgin Street, from which they still operate.
In 1966, Gordon Hughson, who had operated the Hughson Funeral Home in Aylmer for the previous twenty one years, purchased the funeral home and continued the long tradition of dedication and service. Currently, the funeral home is operated by his sons, Allan and Gary Hughson.
