Pc’S Table Motion To Probe OLG

News:

QUEEN’S PARK – A motion put forward Ontario PC MPP Frank Klees in the Standing Committee on Public Accounts asking for the Auditor General to begin an immediate review of the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation passed today.

The motion requires the auditor’s investigation focus on the cancellation of the Slots at Racetracks Program, OLG modernization, and allegations that Toronto will get a special deal for hosting a casino. The probe will also focus on the OLG’s plans for gaming facilities, bingo halls, online gaming and lotteries.

The unilateral nature with which the Liberals cancelled the Slots at Racetracks Program has left many questioning the rationale for the decision.  Many feel that the OLG has catered to special interests in its modernization strategy.

Tory MPP Lisa MacLeod had passed a similar motion in the legislature last spring.  However, motions of legislature are non-binding and the government decided not act in accordance with the motion.  However, the auditor general’s office has stated a motion from the Public Accounts committee will likely be acted upon.

Quotes:

“I am pleased this motion passed today.  We need to probe into the activities of OLG.  The lack of transparency with which they’ve used to destroy the horse-racing industry in favour of casinos, bingo halls, and online gaming is disgraceful.” – Jeff Yurek, MPP

“The horse racing industry in this province has a rich, cultural history in Ontario.  But on top of that, it has provided billions of dollars for health care and education over the years.  A modernization plan so focussed on casinos – where profits have declined considerably since 2003 – is at the very least poor management and at the very worst corrupt.  We need the auditor general to provide us with some of these answers.” – Jeff Yurek, MPP
