Thank you Abbeydale Animal Hospital

A couple of weeks ago we made one of the hardest decisions we have ever faced, we had one of our cats put down. He was suffering, losing weight and not the cat he used to be. It was, and still is, a difficult thing to handle. Each day when I come home from work, I expect him to appear, meowing for more food.

Our vet of choice is Abbeydale Animal Hospital. They had been wonderful each time we had taken our cat in during the previous year and they continued to be when we took our cat for the final time to them.

While the experience could be described as incredibly sad, the staff at Abbeydale were amazingly considerate. They treated our cat with dignity, explained to us exactly what was going to happen, and gave us time with our cat both before and after it was over.

About a week later we received a thank you card from the Ontario Veterinary College at the Univeristy of Guelph, letting us know that in memory of our much missed cat, Abbeydale had made a donation in his name. This was totally unexpected and truly moving.

Yesterday we received a sympathy card from Abbeydale with a hand written note and signed by all the staff. This brought me to the brink of tears. To take the time to send this card means so much to us. It was unexpected and wonderful.

Abbeydale Animal Hospital has gone above and beyond anything they needed to do for us. They are not only amazing to deal with while our pets are still breathing, but once they are gone, Abbeydale continues to be amazing. While I hope we don’t need their services in the near future, I will be happy to visit them again.

  1. I’m so sorry for your loss.

    If It Should Be

If it should be I grow frail and weak
And pain prevents my peaceful sleep.
Then you must do what must be done
When this last battle can’t be won.
You will be sad, I understand.
    Selfishness might stay your hand.
But on this day, more than the rest,
Your love and friendship take the test.

We’ve had so many happy years
That what’s to come can hold no fears.
You’d not want me to suffer. So,
When the time comes, please let me go.

Take me where my needs they’ll tend.
Only — stay with me until the end.
Hold me firm and speak to me.
Until my eyes no longer see.

I know, in time, you, too, will see
It is a kindness that you do for me.
Although my tail it’s last has waved,
From pain and suffering I’ve been saved.

Do not grieve it should be you.
Who must decide this thing to do.
We’ve been so close, we two, these years…
Don’t let your heart hold any tears.
