Frank, one of life’s losers is fired from his job and then told by his doctor that he has an inoperable brain tumour. Frank takes this quite well, all things considered. It is Franks belief that all human kindness, decency and moral fibre has left the nation, and he wishes he could do something about it, then just as he is about to shot himself in the head, he realises that the 16 yr old star of a reality show should die before he does. This is only the begining.
God Bless America is written and directed by Bobcat Goldthwait, he of the squeaky voice comedic roles of the 80s and 90s. What he has produced is a dark comedy for the 21st century world that we live in. On the scale of light to dark, God Bless America is just south of a black hole. It is one of those movies that you watch, laugh and then afterwards wonder if Frank really did do the right thing. In a way this is the anti Natural Born Killers, with the media and society in general being the issue rather than the accomplice.
While there is a lot of violence, most of it is either off-screen or at a distance, or simply bullet holes with blood gushing. There are probably as many swear words as there are bullets flying around but amongst all of this there are some wonderfully comic, and evil lines that the viewer might find themselves repeating more than once.
Frank is played by Joel Murray and his teen psycho accomplish, Roxy, is played by Tara Lynne Barr. Both are wonderful in their roles. Frank and Roxy’s characters are so different that they balance out the scenes, never getting too serious, too offensive, or plain just too violent.
God Bless America is going to be a very polarizing movie. Some people are going to watch it and not understand it at all, some might even walk out before it ends, and then there are going to be those who understand and love it. These will be the people who think that Survivor really should be last one living wins. That those religous fanatics who claim that ‘god hates homosexuals’ will never know because they are going to burn in the deepest, hottest parts of hell.
