Barney Ross and his group of mercenaries are tasked with retrieving the contents of a safe that was on a plane that was shot down, but when the mission goes wrong and one of their own dies, the Expendables vow revenge.
In 2010, the first Expendable movie was released and it seemed that every possible action star from the 80s and 90s was in it. Sylvester Stallone, Jason Statham, Jet Li, Dolph Lundgren, Randy Couture, Steve Austin, Terry Crews, Mickey Rourke, with cameos from Bruce Willis and Arnold Schwarzenegger. Many asked how could they top the original cast, and then the cast list for Expendables 2 was released.
Steve Austin and Mickey Rourke are gone, and Jet Li has a blink and you miss him appearance, but the rest are back for more. Willis and Schwarzenegger have bigger roles this time as well. On top of this add Chuck Norris and Jean-Claude Van Damme. There were probably many giggling middle aged men when they read those additions.
Rather than direct the sequel, Stallone hands the reins off to Simon West who has had an up and down success rate with his previous movies such as The Mechanic, Lara Croft: Tomb Raider, The General’s Daughter, and Con Air. Before the movie’s release there were rumours that Chuck Norris had requested no swearing in the movie. Well, there are no “bad” swear words anyway. What the movie does have in excess is blood, exploding body parts, and fighting. Infact there is so much blood spurting for falling bodies left and right it looks as if the Carrie remake got mixed up with an action movie.
When you have a cast such as this you don’t enter the cinema expecting the second coming of Hamlet, and you won’t be disappointed. There is a basic plot that makes sense but doesn’t really do much else. The banter between the main characters crackles back and forth with in jokes all the way through. Fans of the movies that made the actors household names will enjoy the references but if you don’t get them, it won’t affect the enjoyment.
The original movie surprised a lot of people so expectations for the sequel will be higher this time around. The Expendables 2 should surprise a lot of people again as it is even better.
