Reasons to be cheerful – Part 3

Ian Drury, a UK singer contract Polio as a child and often had to use crutches on stage. A unique but brilliant individual, he wrote and performed for 30 years before his death in 2000, and while his most famous song was, Hit me with your rhythm stick, he is also responsible for a song named Reasons to be Cheerful – Part 3, which inspired this article.

It is easy to ignore the simple, happy moments in life when all around you things are falling down and going to shit, but there are moments that make you smile involuntarily, perhaps without even realising it. It is good to acknowledge them, as they can remind you that not everything is terrible. Here are a couple of mine.

Bic pens. The classic, clear, hexagonal pens filled with blue, black or red ink. While it always writes well and is as cheap as chips, the reason why Bic pens are wonderful is that you can watch the level of the ink drop further and further until there is no more ink showing. It is like a badge showing you how much hard work you have done.

Personalized license plates. Vanity plates on cars can be obnoxious (anything boasting on a sports car), strange or downright silly but there are often those plates that just raise a smile and perhaps an eyebrow. BTCANCER on an SUV probably makes everyone smile who sees it. SONYCHER was a plate on a car that wasn’t being driven by either Sonny or Cher. ENGLSHMN lets other drivers know that they are originally from good ole blighty and there are ones that make you think just a little harder. YYYDLILA anyone?

Headshots. Not those photographs that models and actors circulate in hopes of a job but those very special moments that occur when playing online shooter video games. The one shot, one kill moment that either on the video game or in your head, a voice shouts “Headshot”. It started way back in the 1990’s with Unreal Tournament and is still present in video games today. Rather than several hits to the body, it’s the most economical death and ultimately satisfying. More so when you are playing Modern Warfare 2 and 3 online and continually getting your butt fragged by teenagers. If you want to join the queue of those waiting to frag me, look for Welshrogue on the PS3.

That is just three off the top of my head that happen to make me smile, no matter what else is going on. What are your moments?

Reason to be cheerful – Part 3 lyrics

Some of Buddy Holly, the working folly
Good Golly Miss Molly and boats
Hammersmith Palais, the Bolshoi Ballet
Jump back in the alley, add nanny goats

Eighteen-wheeler Scammels, Domineker camels
All other mammals plus equal votes
Seeing Piccadilly, Fanny Smith and Willy
Being rather silly and porridge oats

A bit of grin and bear it, a bit of come and share it
You’re welcome, we can spare it, yellow socks
Too short to be haughty, too nutty to be naughty
Going on forty, no electric shocks

The juice of the carrot, the smile of a parrot
A little drop of claret – anything that rocks
Elvis and Scotty, the days when I ain’t spotty,
Sitting on the potty, curing smallpox

Reasons to be Cheerful – one, two, three

Reasons to be Cheerful (Part 3)

Health service glasses, gigolos and brasses
Round or skinny bottoms

Take your mum to Paris, lighting up the chalice
Wee Willy Harris
Bantu Stephen Biko, listening to Rico
Harpo, Groucho, Chico

Cheddar cheese and pickle, the Vincent motor sickle
Slap and tickle
Woody Allen, Dali, Dimitri and Pasquale
Balabalabala and Volare

Something nice to study, phoning up a buddy
Being in my nuddy
Saying ‘okey-dokey’, singalonga Smokey
Coming out of chokey

John Coltrane’s soprano, Adi Celantano
Bonar Colleano

Or maybe even never
