Kennington On Top Of The Championship

July 7, 2013. Castrol Edge Dodge driver DJ Kennington has never claimed to be a road racing expert. Though he’s scored previous road course wins turning both left and right isn’t his forte. However in round number four of the NASCAR Canadian Tire Series Kennington showed championship form securing a solid finish at Circuit ICAR to maintain his lead in the overall championship standings.

As usual the #17 Castrol Edge Dodge team’s approach to practice was to learn as much as possible about the track and how the car handled the hot, slick conditions. Though he posted times inside the top five during practice qualifying didn’t go as well and Kennington would line up ninth for the 100km event. “It was tough just to get the right rhythm and decide on the correct gears and shifting” explained Kennington.

As the green flag waved on the field Kennington looked to find that pattern and began to turn very consistent laps. With a long green flag run the field became a little strung out but Kennington continued to push the #17 Castrol Edge Dodge. “It was pretty tough to gain any ground” said the driver. “I just had to be patient and wait for our chance” he added.

As the race laps ticked away Kennington would find opportunities and pounce. The race was slowed by a late caution and the #17 Castrol Edge Dodge would move further forward after the restart and Kennington would claim a sixth place result. “We always try to be at least in the top five on road courses but didn’t quite get there, but we’ll take this. We’re on top in the points and headed to the western races. We swept the west last year and I can’t wait to get back to those tracks” he stated.

Kennington has finished in the top ten in all four races this year and holds a two point’s advantage over second place in the overall standings.

DJ Kennington and the #17 Castrol Edge Dodge team are back in next July 13th at Motoplex Speedway near Vernon, BC.

DJ Kennington realized his biggest racing dream in 2010. In the 17th year of the Kennington and Castrol partnership, the #17 Castrol Edge Dodge driver claimed the NASCAR Canadian Tire Series Championship. And while many would take that as a time to look back and reflect that’s not how DJ Kennington works. The Castrol Edge Dodge team of course took time to celebrate their accomplishment but that only made them hungrier for more success for year eighteen together.

This season DJ Kennington and his team approach the grueling summer schedule that will take them to twelve events from coast to coast knowing what it takes to reach the top of the mountain and achieve the ultimate triumph. Each member of the Castrol team is a professional is every sense. They also know that the competition will be tougher in 2011 and that’s what motivates them.

Most days you will find Kennington working alongside his father, engine builder and most importantly best friend Doug Kennington in race shop. The rest of the Castrol Edge Dodge team is equally dedicated in their preparation for each race weekend. While Kennington is behind the wheel he is in constant communication with his Crew Chief Dave Wight or “Wighty” as everyone calls him. “Wighty” has risen quickly to the leadership position within the team and is like a brother to DJ. He is a tireless worker and he along with Kennington can usually be found at the track discussing the handling characteristics of the car and race strategy.

Kennington’s friendly smile and manner make him one of the most popular drivers with officials, competitors and of course the race fans. DJ is extremely proud to represent Castrol Canada and their long term association together.

2010 was a remarkable year for DJ Kennington and the Castrol Edge Dodge team as they set a series record with five oval track wins in a single season on their way to the title. Now with the 2011 racing season underway the team accepts the challenge to go out and repeat as series champions.
