Byway, Phyllis (nee Johnson)

BYWAY, Mrs. Phyllis (nee Johnson), of St. Thomas, passed away at the St. Thomas Elgin General Hospital on Monday, February 20, 2017, in her 91st year.  Wife of the late Walter Byway (2012).  Mother of Linda Dowdall (late Robert) of St. Thomas, Nancy Byway of Edmonton, AB, Penny Byway of St. Thomas, John Byway (Erika) of Kanata, and the late David Byway (1987).  Sister of Edward Johnson (Mary) of Florida, late Walter Johnson (Joan of London), and the late Mary Beaurone.  Also survived by several grandchildren, 3 great grandchildren, as well as many nieces and nephews.  Born in London, ON, October 7, 1926, she was the daughter of the late Thomas and Edna (nee Askew) Johnson.  She was a member of the 1945 London Shamrock Women’s basketball team that won the Ontario and Eastern Canadian Championship – a team now recognized in the London Sports Hall of Fame. She was also a retired stenographer with Consolidated Bathurst, St. Thomas and former member of Grace United Church, St. Thomas.  In keeping with her wishes, cremation has taken place, and there will be no public visitation or funeral service.  Phyllis’s cremated remains will be interred privately in St. George’s Cemetery, Hyde Park at a later date.  Memorial donations to the CNIB or the London Health Sciences Foundation re: London Regional Cancer Program will be gratefully acknowledged.  Arrangements entrusted to the SIFTON FUNERAL HOME, 118 Wellington St., St. Thomas (519-631-1160).
