Chant- Mildred Jean of St. Thomas passed away peacefully on October 2nd, 2016 at the St. Thomas-Elgin General Hospital in her 88th year. Born in Sparta to Walter and Annabelle Knowlton on June 12th, 1929. Survived by her sister Constance Stevenson of Brantford, ON and her husband Bruce Stevenson of Vineland, ON. Also survived by her cousins Judy Burgess of Sparta and her daughters Charlene Burgess of St. Thomas and Janice Burgess of London. Predeceased by her husband James Chant in 1995. Mildred was a graduate of Sparta Continuation School and Alma College. Mildred received her degree in Pharmacy from the Ontario College of Pharmacy at the University of Toronto. She received her apprenticeship at Roy Brownlee’s Drug Store in St. Thomas. Mildred worked at the Toronto Weston Hospital Pharmacy for 12 years and then went to work for the St. Joseph’s Hospital in Toronto for 17 years until her retirement. Mildred moved to the Sparta area in 1995. She and her husband Jim built a new home on her parent’s farm. She was an active member of First Yarmouth Plains Baptist Church. Mildred enjoyed her time as a member of the Sparta and St. Thomas Senior Knitters and Crafters. The family will receive friends at Williams Funeral Home, 45 Elgin Street, St. Thomas on Tuesday evening from 7-9 p.m. Funeral service will be held at Plains Baptist Church on Wednesday at 1:00 p.m. Interment to follow in Union Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to Plains Baptist Church.
