Hummel, James Menzies of St. Thomas passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on Sunday, May 24 at University Hospital in London in his 64th year. Dearly loved husband and best friend for over 40 years of Marion (Rogers) Hummel. Devoted and loving father of Heather and David. He will be fondly remembered by his cousins Dr. Norah Menzies (Ed Langevin), Dr. Kenneth Menzies (Ann Stallman), Gordon Newcombe and Patricia Butler (Chris). Jim was born in Toronto on December 18, 1951, the son of the late Rev. James and Marion (Menzies) Hummel. Working in Child Welfare for over 25 years, Jim was the former Resources Manager, head of adoption and foster family recruitment at the Family and Children’s Services of St. Thomas and Elgin. Jim pioneered Ontario’s first Foster-to-Adopt program in Ontario. He also worked at The Children’s Aid Society in Hamilton and Chatham. Jim received a Social Work diploma from Fanshawe College. He went on to graduate with a BA, BSW degree from McMaster University and received his Masters of Social Work from the University of Toronto. Recently he served on the Board of Directors and consumer advisory committee for Cheshire Homes. Jim was a strong advocate for social justice and accessibility for the disabled. He had a passion for family, travelling, antiques and maintaining the Menzies family connection to China.
A memorial service to celebrate Jim’s life will be held at Williams Funeral Home, 45 Elgin Street, St. Thomas on Thursday at 1:00pm. Cremation has taken place with interment of ashes in St. Thomas Cemetery. Visitation will be held at the funeral home on Wednesday from 2-4 and 7-9pm.
