Mercer- Father James “Douglas” of Blenheim Community Village, peacefully passed from this life on Monday, June 24th, 2013, at his late residence in his 82nd year. Beloved foster son of Catherine “Kay” Higgins of St. Thomas and the late Ellison Higgins. Dear friend of Marilyn Girard and Robert Karn. Douglas was born June 22, 1932 in Toronto. He was ordained June 2, 1962 by Bishop Emmett Carter. He served as pastor at St. Joseph’s Parish in Chatham, Our Lady of Fatima Windsor, St. Thomas the Apostle, Windsor and St. Paul Parish, La Salle as well as Sacred Heart Parish in Delaware. He was the assistant pastor at St. Michael’s Parish in Ridgetown. Father Mercer was a 4th Degree Member of the Knight’s of Columbus. He served on the Essex Roman Catholic School Board as a consultant.
Mass of the Christian Burial will be Celebrated at St. Anne’s Parish (20 Morrison Dr., St. Thomas) on Thursday at 11:00 a.m. Interment to follow in Holy Angels Cemetery. Visitation will be held at the church on Thursday morning one hour prior to the service from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. Donations to the charity of ones choice.
