POWERS, Leonard H. “Tilly”– Of Metcalfe Gardens, St. Thomas, passed away at the St. Thomas Elgin General Hospital on Saturday, July 18, 2015, in his 99th year. Born in Yarmouth Twp., ON, February 21, 1917, the son of the late Willoughby “Teed” and Grace (nee Berdan) Powers. He will always be remembered by his children, Barbara Gilchrist of London, Joyce Burgin (James) of St. Thomas, Ruby Cromwell (Terry) of Fingal, Wendy Ward (Ken) and Leonard J. Powers (Leslie) of St. Thomas, and Debbie Hindley (Cam) of Sparta, 15 grandchildren, 23 great grandchildren, 11 great great grandchildren, sister-in-law, Irene Rawlins (late Art) of St. Thomas, as well as several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife, Ethel (nee Addley) Powers (1991), friend and companion, Bernice (nee Hewitt) Sealey (2013), sons, Jerry (infant) and Larry Powers (2015), daughter-in-law, Gweyn (nee Luxton) Powers (1993), son-in-law, Robert Gilchrist (2007), grandson, Brad Hindley (2011), and sisters, Pearl Addley (late Len) and Edna Mungar (late Ernie). In his younger years, he worked on the railroad and the Carnation Milk Factory, but the greater portion was spent driving truck for Bannockburn Farms, Ken Axford Trucking, and St. Thomas Concrete, retiring in 1982. Tilly was a very hard working man, and enjoyed his trips to the sunny south with his wife Ethel. He was in good health most of his life, and was appreciative of his time at Metcalfe Gardens during his last year. Relatives and friends will be received by the family on Tuesday, July 21st from 2-4 & 7-9 p.m. at the Sifton Funeral Home, 118 Wellington St., St. Thomas (519-631-1160) where the funeral service will be held on Wednesday, July 22nd at 11:00 a.m. Interment in Union Cemetery. Memorial donations to the Heart & Stroke Foundation of Ontario or the Brain Tumour Foundation of Canada will be gratefully acknowledged.
