John C. (Jack) Roberts, P.Eng., passed away peacefully at home on July 1. Beloved husband of 55 years to Helen (Finlay). Loving father of Jeff (Dorelle) of Canmore, AB. and Todd (Peter) of Providence, R.I. Loving grandfather (Jack-Jack) of Brendan, Thomas and Alexandra of Calgary. Jack graduated with a degree in civil engineering from Queen’s University in 1953. During his years working as an engineer, Jack plied his profession in the Engineering Dept. of the New York Central Railway and at Elgin Construction, and as an educator at Arthur Voaden Secondary School and for his final 30 years at Fanshawe College, retiring as the Chairman of Architecture and Technology in 1996. Jack was a past Chairman of the Kettle Creek Conservation Authority, and instrumental in the development of Lake Whitaker Recreation Area. He also volunteered time on the Executive of the Port Stanley Minor Hockey Association. Jack’s passions included: history, travel and railroads. Jack’s broad depth of knowledge lead his grandchildren to reference the use of “Jack-facts”. He travelled Europe extensively with “the UK Walkers”. Jack was a past member of the St. Thomas Curling Club, and the St. Thomas Golf and Country Club. He was a recent volunteer with the North American Railway Hall of Fame.
A public memorial service will be held at Williams Funeral Home, 45 Elgin St., St. Thomas on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. Visitation at the funeral home on Saturday from 12:00-1:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the North American Railway Hall of Fame (https://www.canadahelps.org/dn/10561), the Art Gallery of St.Thomas-Elgin, or the Alzheimer’s Society.
