Welch, Herbert John of St. Thomas, passed away peacefully on Saturday, August 10th, 2013, at the St. Thomas-Elgin General Hospital after a courageous battle with cancer at the age of 88. Deeply missed by his wife and best friend for 67 years June (Wilson) Welch and lovingly remembered by his children Martin Welch (Linda), Debra McLachlin and Steven Welch (Laura), all of St. Thomas. Fondly remembered by his grandchildren Becky VanPelt (Ryan), Tim Welch (Chrissy), Christopher Welch (Tina), Roxanne Sharkey (Sean), Gary Welch (Jackie) and Andrew Welch. He will be missed by several great grandchildren, nieces and nephews as well as great nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by sisters Rosie Camando (Frank), Viola Gale (Cliff), Katie McPherson (John) ,Doris Lester (Don), and brothers Ralph and Robert Welch (Dora) and Carman Welch. Sadly missed by brother Charles Welch of Earlton. Herb was born in St. Thomas on April 12th, 1925, the son of the late Herbert and Jane (Jennings) Welch. He was retired from the St. Thomas Psychiatric Hospital. Herb served in the Armed Forces during World War II (1943-1946) in the artillery Tank Division as an instructor and served in Holland. He was a drum Major in the Elgin Regiment Band and the New Elgin Regiment Band for several years. He was an Honourary Life member of the Sargeant’s Mess at the Elgin Regiment and a life member of Branch 41 of the Royal Canadian Legion.
Resting at Williams Funeral Home, 45 Elgin St., St. Thomas where funeral service will be held Wednesday at 1:00 p.m. Interment to follow in South Park Cemetery. A memorial service will be conducted at the funeral home on Tuesday evening at 6:45 p.m. by Officers and Members of Branch 41 of the Royal Canadian Legion. Visitation at the funeral home on Tuesday from 7-9 p.m. Remembrances may be made to Cancer Research or the Poppy Fund of the Legion.
