After our amazing vacation last week, John left on a bachelor party weekend to Chicago and I had a different kind of vacation at home with the cats and my couch and my books this past weekend. It was amazing!!

Can you believe that the summer is coming to an end already? It seems to have sped by even faster this year.
Now that Labour Day weekend has passed and the kids have headed back to school, it’s the time of year when many people start getting back into routine and ramping things up out of a slower ‘summer’ mode.

In my recent health workshop, there were a lot of questions about fats, healthy fats, oils and which oils should be eaten or used to cook with.
There is much confusion and misunderstanding on this topic so I want to clear it up so you can get cooking!
What is a Smoke Point?
First of all, let’s learn about something called a ‘smoke point’. This is also known as the flash point and it is the temperature when an oil goes from good to bad. It is the temperature at which the oil begins to break down and produce bluish smoke. When an oil reaches its smoke point, the nutrients begin to oxidize. The molecular structure changes and the oil breaks down into unhealthy compounds.
So which oils can you heat up and stay healthy at the same time?
This is a wonderful addition to put on chicken or pork or dip chicken wings in or just eat with organic tortilla chips.This is John’s recipe so I won’t take the credit for it, but it is soooo yummy!!
Spicy Pineapple Salsa
- 1 Cup Chopped Pineapple
- 2-3 ripe Strawberries
- 1 hot pepper, diced (we used a spicy chili pepper but you could use a jalapeno or other variety of hot pepper goodness)
- 1 green onion, diced
- 1 tbsp extra virgin olive oil
- 1 tbsp raw honey
- Put all ingredients in a food processor and blend
