Change Your Health Right In Your Back Yard

This past weekend was a very busy one in our back yard. John, with the help of some amazing friends and neighbours, has been busy laying an awesome stone patio and it is finished!!

I got the fabulous honour of hammering in the last piece which you can see in this series of photos. In the 3rd one, my neighbor Al is laughing as I celebrate! Bring on summer :)

I was also busy planting my vegetable garden which I’m super excited to share some more details about in today’s feature article.

A Raving Fan

1/2 marathon + Full marathon = Goofy.

“The Goofy Challenge is what Nancy, Carol and I had our sights on. With the help of Peggy as our coach we all accomplished our dream. We were all struggling a bit in the early stages of training and then with 12 weeks to go, Peggy became our coach. Sue, Nancy and Carol

She helped us to understand how nutrition plays a huge role in running and we each came up with menu plans for the week. This took away the stress of thinking about what to make for lunches, snacks and dinners.

She encouraged us to think of our celebrations and challenges and gave us useful information on various topics to help us get through each week. Without the help we received, I don’t know if we would have finished with smiles on our faces.

Peggy gave us the encouragement to reach our goal.

Thank you Peggy for all the help and information you gave me over the past few 12 weeks. It certainly gave me the confidence to move forward and continue with my goal of running the Goofy Challenge at Disney. I appreciated the phone calls each week which helped me through the rough times when I had a not so good training week.”

Change Your Health Right In Your Back Yard

If you have been reading my posts in the past couple of years or following me on social media, you may have noticed that I have an interest in food and nutrition and how it has a major influence on health and wellness.

Our current conventional industrial food production system has problems that are having a negative effect on the health of our population.

Unfortunately, the way our current system works, the quest for higher yields and higher profits trumps the need to produce food that is good for health.

I usually sum this up for people with the following statement:

We have a food system that isn’t interested in health and a health system that isn’t interested in food.

I’m very interested in helping people to negotiate this particular conundrum by making food choices that are taking them closer to a better state of health rather than further away from it. (With the lovely outcome that they will have less need for the health system… doesn’t that work out great?)

When speaking with patients and clients, my first recommendation to them is to get back to basics. I tell them to eat less CRAP and eat more FOOD.

Fun in the Kitchen with Dr Peggy

Salmon Cakes and Avocado Salad

A few weeks ago I introduced you to some very delicious salmon cakes. This past Friday, I was making lunch for a friend and included the salmon cakes cold on this delicious salad. It was soooo yummy :)


1-2 cold salmon cakes (see recipe here)
1 sliced avocado
A plate full of mixed greens
2-3 tbsps of Kick Ass Asian Salad Dressing (see recipe here)
2 tbsps of shredded carrot


1. Place mixed greens on a plate
2. Add the sliced avocado
3. Add the salmon cakes
4. Sprinkle the shredded carrot on top
5. Add the salad dressing.
