Just before 2:00am on June 15, 2015, the St. Thomas Police were called to the St. Thomas Sportsman Club as there were reports of a large gathering and a disturbance going on.
Upon arrival Police located two individuals that had been sprayed with bear spray and had defended themselves against a 1 1/8 pipe wrench. Police learned that this incident had stemmed from an incident earlier in the year and had been building on Facebook which ultimately resulted in the arranged meeting that took place.
As a result a 19 year-old Southwold man has been charged with Assault with a weapon X4, possession of a prohibited device and possession of a weapon for dangerous purpose. He was held pending a bail hearing.
A 20 year-old St. Thomas female who assisted during the incident has also been charged with possession of a prohibited device and possession of a weapon for dangerous purpose. She was later released with conditions.
Both victims in the incident suffered minor injuries.
Bear spray is allowed in Canada BUT, strictly for the use on animals to protect yourself. The use of Bear spray on humans like the incident above is against the law and will result in criminal charges.
