We’ve received several calls regarding the ongoing Canada Revenue Agency Scam. Members of our community have been receiving calls from an unknown person(s) described as having heavy accents indicating they are the, CRA, RCMP, or a member of the OPP.
They are informing the unsuspecting victims that they owe money to the CRA and that if it is not paid immediately a member of law enforcement will come and arrest them. In some of the cases the number showing up is actually the Elgin OPP Detachment. Please be advised it is NOT them calling. To reassure yourself you can hang up and call back the Elgin OPP directly to confirm it was them or not.
Please remember that the CRA does not make house calls and law enforcement agencies will not come and arrest you on their behalf.
If you find yourself being on the receiving end of a similar call and you’re unsure of what to do, please call a family member, friend or even your accountant to verify if you do owe money before sending any.
