Kids and Cops Celebrate Fishing

Aylmer, ON: It’s that time of year again! Local children will be grabbing their fishing gear for the 27th Annual Optimist Catfish Derby on Lake Erie in Port Bruce.

Sponsored by the Aylmer Optimist Club, this catfish derby will take place from 6:00 am to 12:00 pm on Sunday, June 14 and is open to children ages 4 to 15. Anglers are asked to bring their own fishing gear, and all participants must be accompanied by an adult. Kids can also look forward to giveaways, prizes and a free hotdog lunch. Officers from the West Elgin OPP detachment will be available to lend a helping hand.

The event is sponsored by Fishing Forever, a not-for-profit organization dedicated to funding worthwhile fishing, conservation and education projects. The are donating to the event a number of trolling reels for the youngsters that are not as well equipped. It is also supported by the Police Association of Ontario, Canadian Tire, the Aylmer Optimist Club and West Elgin OPP.

Bob Izumi, well-known fishing personality and chair of Fishing Forever, is an avid supporter of recreational fishing: “Fishing is one of the best ways for parents and other adults to establish productive and healthy relationships with children and promote conservation.”
