School Bus Safety Week is October 19 – 23, 2015

London, Ontario, October 15, 2015: Southwestern Ontario Student Transportation Services (STS) is pleased to announce that next week is School Bus Safety Week. 72 school boards within the Province of Ontario
utilize 33 transportation consortia to coordinate school bus service for more than 850,000 students daily. Over 20,000 school bus routes take to Ontario’s roadways each instructional day to support student education. In
London and the three surrounding counties, over 46,000 students are bussed daily as coordinated by STS, the consortium for the London District Catholic and Thames Valley District School Boards.
School bus safety week provides an opportunity to talk to your kids about rules of the road and school bus safety. Whether you have kids traveling to school by bus or are a motorist in a school zone, everyone benefits from an increased focus on road safety, obeying posted speed limits and carefully observing pedestrians.

STS would like to remind everyone how important it is to obey the law and come to a complete stop while the red signal-lights of a school bus are flashing. There is a maximum fine of $2,000 and the accumulation of 6 demerit points under the Highway Traffic Act for vehicle owners who choose to disobey the law and illegally pass a stopped school bus.

Throughout School Bus Safety Week, watch for social media messages tagged with #BusSafety15 as a way to engage your community in the discussion. “The use of social media is yet another channel for us to highlight the importance of school bus safety with our community members and parents who play a vital role in reinforcing the importance of appropriate behavior around and on the bus.” Says STS General Manager Maureen Cosyn Heath.

The capstone event for the week includes a School Bus Driver Appreciation Day, which will be celebrated on October 22. Parents and guardians are encouraged to recognize their school bus driver with a simple thank you or acknowledgement of a job well done under often complex conditions. STS’s Facebook Page will again be a place for people to leave positive commendations for their bus drivers. Last year, more than 90 commendations were received for area bus drivers.
