How to play nice with others.

It is a little ironic (don’t you think?) that I write this as I have been described many times as ‘Does not play well with others’. I was going to write that I prefer to play with myself than others but for obvious reasons I am not going to. When it comes to advertising and promotion though, it always pays to play nicely. When this website was created, it was so that there would be a place online that was promoting St. Thomas, but also listing events that were being held by so many organizations. The reason why the website came about was that there was no sharing of information, far from it. If organization ‘A’ was having an event, unless you looked at their website, you wouldn’t have the details. There was very little cross promotion between these organizations. This is where we came in, because with no affiliation to any organization, business or charity, we don’t play favours, keep the information to ourselves or require you to only look at our website to discover what goes on in St. Thomas. It isn’t always easy to get the information that we want to share. A lot of time and [...]

Politics and Signs

I know that if you want to be elected for something, be it class president, city council, or president of the country, you need to get your name out there and on everyone’s lips, but I find the numerous signs that appear whenever there is going to a vote as an eye sore and an annoyance. The bigger the sign, there less chance that I am actually going to care enough to vote for you. Surely if you need to become known to the voting public, you need to be seen, heard, and understood. To me, signs just look like someone is selling a house, rather than selling an idea, a philosophy or a statement. I appreciate that, with voter turnout being low, you need to use every trick in the book, but surely this should be a challenge to politicians to find new ways to become known. The local newspaper, which has a small number of subscribers, is the traditional way, appearing on TV, the same. Why not host discussions on Facebook, or on this website, where people who care, and want St. Thomas to thrive and become a successful city can ask important questions and get answers. All [...]

Concert Review – The Caverners

The Friday night concert at the St. Thomas Iron Horse Festival as performed by The Caverners, Canada’s top Beatles cover band. Once they started with ‘I saw her standing there’  the music didn’t stop, with the exception of a approximately 20 minute interlude, for two enjoyable hours. The band, who not only looked like John, Paul, Ringo and George, changed costumes and hair to match the appropriate era of the music, the second half of the set complete with Sgt. Pepper outfits. Technical difficulties (a keyboard that died) probably stopped a few classics from being played but there were a great number of instantly recognizable songs preformed. ‘Back in the USSR’, ‘With a little help from my friends’, ‘Getting Better’ and countless others were played and well received from the crowd who warmed up the band as the night went along. The only song not from the Beatles catalog was John Lennon’s ‘Imagine’ which was very well received from the crowd that seemed to be a little older than the average modern day rock concert goer. With the Beatles being such a staple in so many people’s lives it is not difficult to see why The Caverners are so well [...]
